The church is situated at the end of Church Lane, on a bluff overlooking the River Trent. There was certainly a wooden church here in Saxon times, and it is thought that the first stone building and foundations of the present day church were laid in the late Saxon period. However, the main body of the building that can be seen today was begun during the Norman period and altered and extended during the 14th and 15th centuries. It is, indeed, likely to be the oldest church still holding regular worship in Nottinghamshire today. This spacious church retains its bench pews and a beautifully painted Nave ceiling. The east window has some 15th century stained glass with most of the remaining stained glass dating from the 19th-20th century.
